Have Your Say: The Future of Lynx in Scotland

It has been centuries since the Eurasian lynx roamed the Scottish Highlands. Driven to extinction by habitat loss and hunting, this elusive predator exists now only in history books and ancient stone carvings. But could that change?

The conversation around reintroducing this “missing species” is gaining momentum. Scientific studies suggest that Scotland has the habitat and wild prey necessary to support a healthy lynx population. However, ecological suitability is only one piece of the puzzle. Social acceptance—how you feel about sharing the landscape with a large carnivore—is equally critical.

Now is your chance to join that conversation.

What is Lynx to Scotland?

Lynx to Scotland is a partnership between three leading charities: SCOTLAND: The Big Picture, Trees for Life, and The Lifescape Project. Since 2020, this collaboration has been meticulously assessing the feasibility of returning lynx to the Scottish landscape through a carefully managed reintroduction process.

The project isn’t just about ecology; it is deeply committed to understanding the human perspective. Following study tours to Switzerland and Slovenia to learn from communities living alongside lynx, the partnership is now focused on local consultation. They want to understand the aspirations, opportunities, and concerns of the people who live and work in potential reintroduction areas.

Join the Conversation in Forres

To facilitate open discussion, Lynx to Scotland is hosting a series of drop-in information sessions. These events are designed to be informal and welcoming, providing a neutral space where you can learn more about the proposals and, most importantly, share your views.

The next and final session in Forres is detailed below.

Event Details

  • Date: Wednesday 11th February
  • Time: 5:00 pm – 8:30 pm
  • Location: Forres Town Hall (Home of Forres Area Community Trust)

Why Your Voice Matters

The potential return of the lynx is a significant topic for the Highlands and Moray. Proponents argue that as a top predator, the lynx could help restore balance to ecosystems, influence deer behaviour, and even boost eco-tourism. Conversely, concerns exist regarding livestock, particularly sheep, and the management of a reintroduced species.

These information sessions are not just presentations; they are opportunities for dialogue. Whether you are excited by the prospect of rewilding or have specific worries about how it might impact your livelihood or community, your perspective is essential. The Lynx to Scotland partners are there to listen, answer questions, and gather the diverse range of views necessary to inform any future decisions.

Be Part of the Discussion

We encourage everyone in the local area to drop by Forres Town Hall on February 11th. You don’t need to be an expert in ecology or conservation—you just need to be a member of the community with a view to share.

If you cannot attend in person, you can still participate by visiting the Lynx to Scotland website to complete their questionnaire or request an individual conversation.

This is a unique opportunity to shape a major conservation conversation in Scotland. Let’s ensure the future of our landscape is built on collaboration, understanding, and shared vision.

Ruth Jeffries on Keith Community Radio: Befriending Service and Forres Town Hall

Ruth Jeffries, the Befriending Coordinator at Forres Area Community Trust (FACT), recently took to the airwaves on Keith Community Radio to share insights about the vital Befriending Service and the vibrant activities at Forres Town Hall.

The Befriending Service, relaunched in partnership with Highland Hospice, has been a cornerstone of community support since 2017, helping to reduce loneliness and isolation. Ruth highlighted how just a couple of hours a week from volunteers can make a world of difference to those seeking companionship. She also emphasised the satisfaction volunteers gain from building meaningful connections.

In addition to discussing the Befriending Service, Ruth shed light on the dynamic role of Forres Town Hall as a hub for community events and activities. From hosting workshops to providing spaces for local initiatives, the Town Hall continues to be a vital resource for the Forres area.

FACT Relaunches Befriending Service in Partnership with Highland Hospice

We’re thrilled to share some exciting news about the relaunch of our volunteer befriending service, thanks to a new partnership with Highland Hospice. This collaboration ensures the continuation and growth of a vital service that has been reducing loneliness and isolation in our community since 2017.

Previously known as The Cameron Project, our befriending service connects volunteers with individuals seeking companionship through visits and phone calls. With the support of Highland Hospice, we now have access to shared training, guidance, and funding, as well as assistance with administrative tasks and volunteer mentoring.

Ruth Jeffries, our befriending coordinator, highlights the impact of this service: “Just a couple of hours a week can make a big difference to the requestors, and the volunteers get an enormous sense of satisfaction.”

However, we need your help! There’s currently a waiting list of people eager to make new friends. If you have a few spare hours, a friendly nature, and a hobby or interest to share, we’d love to hear from you. Volunteering involves checks, references, and training to ensure you’re well-prepared to support older adults in our community.

To learn more about this initiative and how you can get involved, visit Forres Town Hall, call 01309 674388, or email ruth@forresarea.org.
